Greetings, Brooklyn.  Today is the 303rd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1905, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Four Brooklynites Adrift on a Disabled Yacht.”  The article focused on a yacht being stranded due to a disabled steering gear.

“Eight hours spent in the darkness of early morning on a disabled yacht on Long Island Sound, with heavy seas breaking over the rails and only a spluttering ill lamp to guard against being run down by some big steamer, was the experience of four Brooklynites,” the Eagle reported.

JOHN ADAMS was born on this day in 1735.  Adams was the second president of the U.S. and had been George Washington’s vice president.  He died on the same day as Thomas Jefferson on July 4, 1826.

“WAR OF THE WORLDS” was broadcasted on this day in 1938.  The broadcast was part of a series of radio dramas based on famous novels by Orson Welles.  When “War of the Worlds” was read on the radio, near panic resulted when listeners believed the simulated news bulletins, which described a Martian invasion of New Jersey, to be real.
