ON THIS DAY in 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Four Gunmen Found Guilty in First Degree.” The article focused on a man who was found guilty for murder.  His was sentenced to “go to the chair.”

“The courtroom was absolutely silent as the verdict was announced,” the Eagle reported.

THE COLD WAR formally ended on this day in 1990.  A summit was held at Paris with the leaders of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.  The highlight of the summit was the signing of a treaty to dramatically reduce conventional weapons in Europe.

ROY CAMPANELLA was born on this day in 1921.  Campanella was one of the first black major leaguers and a star on the Brooklyn Dodgers’ “Boys of Summer.” He died in 1993.

LINCOLN’S GETTYSBURG Address took place on this day in 1863.  In that year, 17 acres of the battlefield at Gettysburg, Pa., were dedicated as a national cemetery.  Lincoln’s address was later recognized as one of the most eloquent of the English language.

DARCEY STEINKE will appear in conversation with Rick Moody at 7 p.m. tonight at WORD Brooklyn in Greenpoint.  The event includes a reading, talk, Q&A and signing.  

“WAYFINDERS,” written and directed by Holcombe Waller, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. tonight at BAM Fisher.  Tickets are $20.  The evening features Waller’s “theatrically staged song cycle.”
