Brooklyn native Shauneequa Owusu is a rising star at the New York Academy of Medicine who has used the Brooklyn Public Library all her life. Last year, in an effort to ensure that the borough’s youngest learners have access to the same opportunities that she did, Owusu joined Brooklyn Public Library’s Brooklyn Eagles — a group of Brooklyn’s young philanthropists who are working to raise support for the borough’s preeminent cultural institution, especially its services for children.

Taking a page from New York Public Library’s longstanding “Young Lions” group, Brooklyn Public Library aims to harness the unflinching political and social capital of Brooklyn to cultivate a growing group of socially-conscious young professionals to help steward the library in an age of rising usage and declining public funding.

Since joining the Eagles, Owusu has helped to garner the group’s more than 100 members, and is committed to growing the borough’s burgeoning philanthropists in support of the Library.

The Eagles’ second annual event, the Brooklyn Classic, is being held Sept. 30 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Library’s Central Branch at Grand Army Plaza. Tickets are $150, ($85 is tax-deductible) and include a Brooklyn Eagles membership.  The party will include signature cocktails and Sixpoint beer, Latin-inspired fare from Naturally Delicious.  Proceeds will support Brooklyn Public Library’s youth programming.  For tickets, visit http://www.bklynlibrary.org/support/brooklyn-classic.
