ON THIS DAY in 1904, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “A Dr. Jekyll at Night and a Mr. Hyde by Day.”  The article focused on a man named Elwood Sievers who allegedly collected $3,000 worth of Harlem gas bills.  “The Manhattan police are of the opinion that they have secured the man who has been collecting gas bills for the past three months and the companies assert that their losses during this time have amounted to thousands of dollars, more than $3,000 of which had been collected in Harlem alone,” the Eagle reported.

JAMES DEAN died on this day in 1955.  Rising young film star, Dean died in an auto accident near Cholame, Calif., two hours after receiving a speeding ticket.  He was 24 year old at the time.  He is known for his movies “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant.”
