Senior citizens will be able to enjoy free tennis lessons, take part in yoga classes, or go on walks to improve their fitness – all in the great outdoors – this spring, thanks to the City Parks Foundation, which is offering a series of exercise programs.

Two Brooklyn parks, Marine Park, located in the neighborhood of the same name, and South Oxford Park, in Fort Greene, are among the parks in the five boroughs serving as locations for the foundation’s CityParks Seniors Fitness program. The program is sponsored by Airbnb.

The spring 2015 season begins the week of April 27.

In Marine Park, tennis lessons will be offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. on the tennis courts on Avenue S and East 32nd Street. Yoga classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 a.m. in the park’s Nature Center on Avenue U and East 32nd Street.

In South Oxford Park, seniors can enjoy yoga classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. on South Oxford Street and Atlantic Avenue.

CityParks Seniors Fitness has served over 7,000 participants since it began in 2006, according to the City Parks Foundation. The program encourages New Yorkers to maximize the health benefits of staying active at all ages.

“Exercise is so important at all ages, but it is especially important for seniors who typically lead more sedentary lifestyles,” says Mike Silverman, director of sports at City Parks Foundation. “We’ve found that exercising even just once a week helps participants feel better mentally and emotionally. Seniors Fitness is a great opportunity for seniors to be social and meet new people in their neighborhoods, while getting outside and having some fun.”

The program runs for eight weeks.
