The issues surrounding retirement, including when to retire and how much money one should be saving toward retirement, will be the main focus of a seminar to take place in Bensonhurst next month.

Assemblyman William Colton (D-Gravesend-Bensonhurst) and the Russian-American Community Coalition are co-sponsoring the seminar to be held on Thursday, April 30, at the United Progressive Democratic Club, 29 Bay 25 St., at 7 p.m.

The seminar, which is free, is called “Are You Ready for Retirement?”

The goal is to help people prepare for retirement, according to Colton.

“This event will help many people adequately plan for their retirement years. There are many different aspects of retiring, some which people don’t think about until they are ready to retire. This seminar will help people begin thinking about all these different factors that need to be considered when planning to retire. It’s important that those hoping to retire receive ample information about retirement, such as health care coverage, financial knowledge, and estate planning,” he said in a statement.

The topics to be discussed at the seminar will include “Best Time to Retire,” “Health Care Coverage for Retirees” and “How to Minimize Taxes on Your Retirement Income.”

The speakers will include representatives of the Social Security Administration, Medicare experts, accountants and lawyers specializing in retirement planning.

“Figuring out the right time to retire is not an easy decision. There are no hard and fast rules that define retirement. But we can all agree retirement is the withdrawal from a traditional lifestyle.  Many people also view these years as an opportunity to semi-retire, and that usually means working in a more rewarding job; usually out of choice and not necessity,” a statement from the coalition read.

The seminar will also include a special section on Baby Boomers; those Americans born between 1946 and 1964.

The section called “Preparing for the Unexpected: What Baby Boomers Need to Know about Estate Planning” will feature a presentation by a lawyer who specializes in estate planning and will include information on how to draft a comprehensive estate and retirement plan.

For more information on the seminar, call Colton’s office at 718-236-1598.
