A Festival of Hope: Three Honored at HopeFest Gala Dinner
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 10-16-2008

In a true festival of hope, the Francesco Loccisano Memorial Foundation held their First Annual HopeFest Gala Dinner on Friday, October 10, at the El Caribe Country Club. Billed as “an inspirational evening—a noble cause,” it most definitely lived up to its label.

The master of ceremonies, Kevin Breen, started the evening off by introducing the singing of “God Bless America” and a blessing. Breen, also a member of their Board of Directors, then introduced the co-chairs of the evening, Christina Bruno and Stephen Trimboli. The Foundation co-chairs then followed, Camille Loccisano (Francesco’s mom) and Lucy Bruno (Camille’s sister), by giving brief speeches thanking all in attendance.

Three honorees were presented with plaques from the Foundation and certificates from Senator Marty Golden and Councilman Vincent Gentile. Honorees were Matthew Long, a Bay Ridge firefighter who was struck by a bus in Manhattan during the illegal NYC transit strike of 2005. At the time, Matt was given a one-percent chance of survival, and on Friday, he was present to accept the award in person. On November 2, Matt will run the NYC Marathon. His award, The Courage Award, was presented by Marianne Teta.

Alexandra Cappelini, a remarkable 14 year old, is a member of this year’s graduating class at Xaverian’s Genesis Program. She is an avid reader and music lover, writes stories and poetry, and enjoys swimming and skiing. She is also a pediatric cancer survivor and an amputee. Alexandra received The Hope Award, again presented by Teta.

Lifelong Brooklyn resident, Tom Kane, received The Community Spirit Award for his constant work for the youth of Bay Ridge. Whether it be sports-related, developmental or health-related, Tom’s dedication and commitment to his community and their many important projects is exemplary. Board of Director member Richard Rizzuto presented Tom with his award.

“It was the most inspirational event I have ever attended,” said Kerry Borst, who was there to see her brother Tom receive his plaque.

That was the sentiment of the entire room.
