WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Hillary Clinton yesterday announced a young man from Brooklyn as one of her 10 nominees to attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
Clinton nominated Andrew Lum, of Brooklyn, to be a Midshipman, as they are called at the academy, and to someday become a member of the Merchant Marines — not to be confused with the Marine Corps, which is a division of the U.S. Navy.
Each member of Congress is allotted five spaces to fill at each of the four military academies over the course of four years. Members of Congress nominate up to 10 applicants to be considered equally for each academy.
Clinton nominated a total of 40 applicants for the Military, Air Force, Naval and Merchant Marine academies, choosing from men and women from all over New York state. Lum is one of four Clinton nominees from New York City, and the only one from Brooklyn.
