Hundreds of members of the Transit Workers Union (TWU) Local 100 expressed their outrage Wednesday afternoon with a fiery rally in Downtown Brooklyn at Cadman Plaza West and Montague streets, followed by a march across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall. In this second âDay of Outrage,â the union is protesting the MTAâs attempt to undo an arbitration panel's binding decision to give transit workers 11 percent wage hikes spread over three years.

This playground is under construction at Pier 6 at the foot of Atlantic Avenue, within the future Brooklyn Bridge Park. The wooden structures will be âplay houses,â while the concrete forms will enclose sandboxes. Another playground within the park, in DUMBO, is already functioning. Hundreds of New Yorkers joined the environmental advocacy group Greenpeace this past Saturday in the March for Climate Leadership across the Brooklyn Bridge. The march was part of the largest global day of climate action ever as one of more than 4,500 events in over 170 countries to call on President Obama and other world leaders to secure a fair, ambitious and binding global deal in Copenhagen this December at the UN Climate Change Conference. {read more...}
Pet owners and their pets â wearing red ponchos, T-shirts and bandannas â braved the drizzle in Brooklyn Heights this past Saturday morning to take part in the third annual K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk, sponsored by Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI).The four kilometer walk took participants from Cadman Plaza Park over the Brooklyn Bridge and back. These young people enjoyed the Rockabye Ride at the annual Halloween Pumpkin Patch at Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights last Sunday. Parents, students and staff design and construct most of the games, decorations and a traditional haunted house that filled most of the private schoolâs garden playground and gyms.
Local teens from Starting Artists started an âAirborne Contaminants Masksâ project last week at their local art space at 211 Smith St. in response to their feelings about living near the polluted waters and banks of the toxic Gowanus Canal. These teen artists expressed
deep concern over their health and safety in the event of a Gowanus Canal cleanup.

Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn and Queens) reunited, for the first time since the accident, Keith Gorman with Alla Yelizarov and her two daughters Rebecca and Tayla, the family he rescued from Sheepshead Bay after their car plunged into the water earlier this month. Rep. Weiner helped reunite the family at the Baron DeKalb Knights of Columbus, blocks from the accident, and presented Keith Gorman with a congressional proclamation for his bravery.
