The View from the Cheap Seats
June 25
by Eddie Mayrose (phoebe@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-25-2009

By Eddie Mayrose

Say this for the 109th US Open at Bethpage; it certainly wasn’t boring. There was Justin Glover, the surprise winner whose steadiness belied the fact that he had but one previous Tour victory on his resume. Ricky Barnes, another unknown who set a thirty-six hole Open scoring record, collapsed in the final round and finished tied for second. David Duval, the best player in the world before Tiger, found some of his old magic and {read more...}

Keep an eye on Royals’ hurler Gil Meche over his last few starts. Sunday, in his first outing since throwing a career high 132 pitches in going the distance vs. Arizona, Meche was lit up by the Cardinals to the tune of 9 ER in just 3 IP… Look for the Cubs’ slumping {read more...}

by Eddie Mayrose (phoebe@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-25-2009

Here we are, just a month away from the opening of NFL camps and one of the many things with which owners need to concern themselves as they head into this year’s fantasy football draft is whether or {read more...}

Yanks All Wet
Brooklyn Sweeps Rain-Shortened Verrazano Series
by John Torenli (sports@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-24-2009

By John Torenli

Brooklyn owns Staten Island. At least for the next three weeks it does.

Somewhere between the seemingly unceasing raindrops that fell on Coney Island over the weekend, the Cyclones opened their ninth season as the Mets’ Class A Short-Season franchise by sweeping a pair of games from the rival Staten Island Yankees.

They also managed to teach their intra-city rivals some lessons in defense, opportunism and perseverance.

Just ask Staten Island manager Josh Paul.

“They capitalized {read more...}

Believe it or not, we’re probably within two weeks or so of finding out which university Lance Stephenson will attend in the fall.

The former Lincoln High School basketball star and winner of an unprecedented four consecutive PSAL championships is now expected to give his long-awaited decision shortly after his {read more...}

By now, we’re all tired of hearing about the value of using two hands to catch a baseball. Met fans are out shopping for new televisions while Yankee fans are petitioning for a plaque honoring Luis Castillo in Monument Park. There are, however, a few things about Friday night’s game I’d {read more...}

The Fantasy Forecast
In The Gap
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-18-2009

By Moonlight Graham

Took advantage of Monday’s limited MLB schedule and caught two baseball classics. First, on the SNY network, I was able to revisit my youth by watching Game 4 of the 1969 World Series between the Mets and the Orioles. Lindsey Nelson and Curt Gowdy had the call, Earl Weaver became, (I {read more...}

Pedro on a Mission
New Cyclones Skipper Raring to Go as Opening Day Approaches
by John Torenli (sports@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-17-2009

By John Torenli

Forget “Ya Gotta Believe!” The new motto for the New York Mets’ Short-Season franchise in Brooklyn is “You Gotta Win!”

At least that appears to be Pedro Lopez’s primary goal as first-year manager of the Cyclones — not a bad one considering our borough’s Minor League baseball fanatics suddenly find themselves starved {read more...}

The Brooklyn Mariner
Seattle Selects LIU’s James Jones in Fourth Round of MLB Draft
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-12-2009

Brooklyn native James Jones knew he would be selected during this week’s Major League First-Year Player Draft.

The Long Island University star and former Telecommunications High School phenom just wasn’t positive whether it would be as a left-hander pitcher or a five-tool position player.

Nice to have those types of little problems, isn’t it?

“Whatever it takes to make it to the Majors,” Jones said after being taken in the fourth round (113th overall) by the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, instantly {read more...}

by John Torenli (sports@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-12-2009

Bid for Back-to-Back Titles Ends with 4-3 Defeat

By John Torenli

Xaverian coach Dennis Canale revealed before Wednesday’s playoff showdown against Fordham Prep that his top-seeded Clippers had already defended their Catholic High School Athletic Association title with great merit.

In fact, he felt they didn’t need to become the first back-to-back intersectional champs in over 30 years to legitimize their place in the Bay Ridge school’s baseball {read more...}

‘Heart and Soul’
Senior Hurler Hajjar Saves Season for Bay Ridge’s Clippers
by John Torenli (sports@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-11-2009

By John Torenli

Anthony Hajjar took the mound with one purpose in mind Monday afternoon at St. John’s University: Don’t let it end.

The senior hurler fired five two-hit innings and the Xaverian offense did the rest as the top-seeded and defending champion Clippers breezed past No. 3 Xavier, 9-2, to advance to yesterday afternoon’s (weather permitting) CHSAA Class A intersectional elimination against No. 6 Fordham Prep.

“Anthony has been the heart and soul of this team for a couple of years,” Xaverian {read more...}

Tuesday night, Mets 6 Phils 5, in the first of a now critical three game series for the injury laden New Yorkers. While it’s still only June, the Mets must find a way to stay close enough to the World Champions so that, when their stars return to action, they’ll be {read more...}

Tough times for the members of the D’Backs rotation. In a recent six game stretch, the starters put up a 0.73 ERA in yet only came away with a 2-1 record. Arizona’s offensive struggles will likely last all year if a trade isn’t made… Bobby Cox has yet to decide whether {read more...}

World Baseball Classic Proving Hazardous To Health Of MLB Players
by Eddie Mayrose (phoebe@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-11-2009

By Eddie Mayrose

Under Commissioner Bud Selig’s reign, Major League Baseball has become more and more about marketing and sales and way less about the fans or the game, itself. If there’s a way to create a new revenue stream or bump up the current prices, Selig and his merry band of carpet baggers, baseball’s {read more...}

Justin Mendes, the manager of the High School of Telecommunications Girls Softball team, tells me that the team posted a 15-0 record for the regular season and was the second seed in the PSAL Playoffs.

They played Jane Addams in the first round of the playoffs and beat them 8-6 with a fine pitching performance by Tayla Johnson who struck out nine and walked only one in her seven innings on the mound. She was helped by {read more...}
