The View from the Cheap Seats June 25by Eddie Mayrose ( phoebe@brooklyneagle.net), published online 06-25-2009
By Eddie Mayrose
Say this for the 109th US Open at Bethpage; it certainly wasnât boring. There was Justin Glover, the surprise winner whose steadiness belied the fact that he had but one previous Tour victory on his resume. Ricky Barnes, another unknown who set a thirty-six hole Open scoring record, collapsed in the final round and finished tied for second. David Duval, the best player in the world before Tiger, found some of his old magic and {read more...}

Brooklyn owns Staten Island. At least for the next three weeks it does.
Somewhere between the seemingly unceasing raindrops that fell on Coney Island over the weekend, the Cyclones opened their ninth season as the Metsâ Class A Short-Season franchise by sweeping a pair of games from the rival Staten Island Yankees.
They also managed to teach their intra-city rivals some lessons in defense, opportunism and perseverance.
Just ask Staten Island manager Josh Paul.

By now, weâre all tired of hearing about the value of using two hands to catch a baseball. Met fans are out shopping for new televisions while Yankee fans are petitioning for a plaque honoring Luis Castillo in Monument Park. There are, however, a few things about Friday nightâs game Iâd {read more...}

Took advantage of Mondayâs limited MLB schedule and caught two baseball classics. First, on the SNY network, I was able to revisit my youth by watching Game 4 of the 1969 World Series between the Mets and the Orioles. Lindsey Nelson and Curt Gowdy had the call, Earl Weaver became, (I {read more...}

Forget âYa Gotta Believe!â The new motto for the New York Metsâ Short-Season franchise in Brooklyn is âYou Gotta Win!â
At least that appears to be Pedro Lopezâs primary goal as first-year manager of the Cyclones â not a bad one considering our boroughâs Minor League baseball fanatics suddenly find themselves starved {read more...}

Brooklyn native James Jones knew he would be selected during this weekâs Major League First-Year Player Draft.
The Long Island University star and former Telecommunications High School phenom just wasnât positive whether it would be as a left-hander pitcher or a five-tool position player.
Nice to have those types of little problems, isnât it?
âWhatever it takes to make it to the Majors,â Jones said after being taken in the fourth round (113th overall) by the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, instantly {read more...}

Xaverian coach Dennis Canale revealed before Wednesdayâs playoff showdown against Fordham Prep that his top-seeded Clippers had already defended their Catholic High School Athletic Association title with great merit.
In fact, he felt they didnât need to become the first back-to-back intersectional champs in over 30 years to legitimize their place in the Bay Ridge schoolâs baseball {read more...}

Anthony Hajjar took the mound with one purpose in mind Monday afternoon at St. Johnâs University: Donât let it end.
The senior hurler fired five two-hit innings and the Xaverian offense did the rest as the top-seeded and defending champion Clippers breezed past No. 3 Xavier, 9-2, to advance to yesterday afternoonâs (weather permitting) CHSAA Class A intersectional elimination against No. 6 Fordham Prep.

They played Jane Addams in the first round of the playoffs and beat them 8-6 with a fine pitching performance by Tayla Johnson who struck out nine and walked only one in her seven innings on the mound. She was helped by {read more...}
