Hope Davis and the Friends of Douglass Greene Park will host an awards dinner reception followed by a full Gatsby dance party featuring the Michael Arenella Quintet on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Gowanus Ballroom at 55 Ninth St. near Second Avenue in Gowanus.

The fundraiser soirée will celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of the Douglass Greene Park renovation on its Third Avenue side and highlight ongoing advocacy and development of this small public park located on a full city block in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Those receiving awards for their role in enhancing the park include Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Councilmember Stephen Levin, Charlene Nimmons (president of Wyckoff Gardens Resident Association), Sue Wolfe (president of Friends of Douglass Greene Park and former president of Boerum Hill Association), and Commissioner David Yassky.

Under the new moon of Oct. 5, pass along the candle-lit Gowanus Canal to enter Brooklyn in the roaring twenties in a warehouse art space transformed into a dance hall filled with costumed guests and the rich music of the jazz age. Follow other flappers adorned in feathers, boas, and pearls and gentlemen guests wearing bow ties and fedoras dancing the Charleston, Black Bottom, the Cake Walk and the Flea Hop. Roving judges will announce winners of dance and costume competitions.

Don’t forget to look up to see an aerial performance and the continuous slide show of Brooklyn in the 1920s interspersed with the gorgeous hues of travel, movie and advertisement posters all from the 20s.

During the awards reception, Riva Nyri Précil will showcase standards from the ’20s that are still being remade by contemporary singers. Michael Arenella, the master of Gatsby-period music who also leads the annual Governor’s Island Jazz Age Lawn Parties, will lead the group in a full dance party from 8 to 9 p.m. Then, DJ Leaf will spin her turntables fusing the beats, horns and dance rhythm of the roaring 20s with today’s music.

Brooklyn Boulders and Homage Brooklyn climbing and skateboarding demo areas will be on the ground floor together with a slide show of Douglass Greene Park activities and environment. Both Brooklyn Boulders and Homage Brooklyn are active on the Friends of Douglass Greene Park board and hold regular activities at the park.
