Inspired by Fauvell’s ‘1.1 project’

I Am You/You Are Me, the 24th Annual BRIC Contemporary Art Education Exhibition, presents striking works by students from 10 public schools across Brooklyn as well as in Queens and the Bronx. The exhibition, curated by Hawley Hussey, BRIC’s Director of Contemporary Art Education, will be on view May 17 – June 9.

Many adult art-lovers find the annual children’s exhibition to be a fascinating and fun look at art in its genesis. This year’s show presents work in a variety of media, including painting, quilting, collage, poetry, photography and more. The complexity of the media and site-specific installations makes this “a completely unique and dynamic exhibition,” said Hussey in a statement.

The theme was inspired by the launch of artist teacher Kate Fauvell’s 1.1 project, where she will partner with artists, teachers and students across the city to produce 1.1 million life-size images of children, one for every child in the New York City public school system.

During the opening reception, a section of the gallery will be transformed into the 1.1 Studio, where portraits for Fauvell’s project will be created on-site by Kate and her students.

The gallery will host a Family Day art-making workshop on Saturday, May 19, noon – 3 p.m. in association with the exhibition. Families with kids of all ages are invited to drop-in and create their own artwork using inspirational and fun materials. The workshop is led by one of BRIC’s talented artist teachers.

Along with the show, BRIC will honor three of its school partners with the 2012 Michael Kaye Award for Outstanding Art Educator. Allison Conte, Daniel Aguilar and Sarah Monteleone, the creative arts team at I.S. 136 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, are this year’s recipients. The award was named after lauded classroom art teacher Michael Kaye, who served the New York City Department of Education for 40 years and inspired and mentored countless students.

Schools participating in the exhibition include: P.S. 503, The School of Discovery; P.S. 171, The Peter G. Van Alst School; P.S. 48, The Mapleton School; P.S. 310; P.S. 119, The Magnet School for Global and Ethical Studies; Green School; P.S. 8; I.S. 136; P.S. 110, The Monitor; and Bronx Envision Academy.
