Good morning. Today is the 324th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Nov. 19, 1902, ran a story saying that the Brooklyn Rapid Transit (BRT) company decided to supervise its employees more closely after two of them were caught robbing a fellow employee’s desk of $150 in the Bergen Street trolley car barn. In today’s money, this would be more than $600. The BRT eventually became the BMT division of today’s subway system under municipal ownership, and its trolley lines eventually were converted to bus lines by the city.
Well-known people who were born today include TV host Dick Cavett, actress Jodie Foster (“The Silence of the Lambs,” “Taxi Driver”), U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Brooklyn-born former talk show host Larry King, sports executive Ted Turner and former General Electric chairman Jack Welch.

Today between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Borough Hall Plaza, Deputy Borough President Sandra Chapman will distribute nearly a thousand Thanksgiving turkeys, along with apples, greens, baking potatoes and sweet potatoes, to representatives of 120 Brooklyn community groups. Volunteers will help distribute the food to Brooklynites who live in neighborhoods hard hit by Hurricane Sandy, as well as to senior centers, soup kitchens, churches and women’s shelters.
