Long Island College Hospital won’t close right away, but it might as well. It’s a dead man walking.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center President John Williams told the Wall Street Journal that closing the Cobble Hill hospital could take as little a two weeks or as much as a few months, during which time the state Health Department will review the closure plan. The state agency rarely, however, reverses a hospital’s decision to close, the Journal reported.

LICH supporters tried on Friday to keep hope alive, but Williams tossed a very wet blanket.

Williams said Friday that “realistically we know as soon as word gets out today, patients are going to stop coming,” and that doctors and nurses who could find other jobs would leave, the New York Times reported.
