As members of the press gathered in anticipation, MTA New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco, NYU Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Engagement Alicia Hurley and New York Transit Museum Director Gabrielle Shubert hosted a ceremony during which a time capsule was unearthed in Brooklyn on Wednesday.

The capsule was put in place in 1950 beneath the Board of Transportation building at 370 Jay St., and was found to contain water-damaged contents, including a newspaper, a nickel and a glass container holding microfilm.

Conservator Toya Dubin (pictured) from Hudson Microimaging and Transit Museum Archivist Carey Stumm were on hand to carefully bag the contents for transfer to the Transit Museum archives. Dubin remarked that it’s “lovely to see old things, but sad to see them all damaged by water.”
