Brooklyn Today
Good morning, Brooklyn. Today is the 283rd day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1907, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Mrs. Pepper Arrested on a Charge of Theft.” The article focused on a woman who was charged with stealing a house and lot from an aged man … who was her husband.
“Bishop Mary Ann Scannell-Pepper-Vanderbilt had a most terrible time getting arrested in Brooklyn this morning,” the Eagle reported. “She is accused of stealing a house and lot from Edward Ward Vanderbilt, who afterward became her husband, the charge being made by Miss Minerva Vanderbilt, the bishop’s step-daughter.” The whole ordeal was due to a warrant going astray.
