Bishop Kearney HS senior is scholarship finalist

Bishop Kearney High School senior Shannon Guerrero says the Peter M. Flanigan Scholarship will allow her to pursue her dream of graduating from college, something her parents did not have the opportunity to do.

A Catholic high school student from Brooklyn is close to getting the chance to fulfill her dream of a college education. Shannon Guerrero, 17, a senior at Bishop Kearney High School in Bensonhurst, is a finalist for the prestigious Peter M. Flanigan Scholarship, a program that provides up to $10,000 a year toward college costs.

The scholarship, which was established eariler this year in honor of Peter M. Flanigan, the founder of Student Sponsor Partners, also provides a student with the advisory support necessary to attend a highly selective college or university.

For Guerrero, the scholarship would be a dream come true. “My parents never had the opportunity to finish college. This scholarship will allow me to pursue my dreams and the career path of my choice,” she said.

Guerrero is currently ranked sixth in her class at Bishop Kearney HS with a cumulative GPA of 96.8.

“One of my ambitions is to be a role model for younger girls. I want to show girls what an enormous difference an education can make,” Guerrero said.

Dr. Margaret Minson, president of Bishop Kearney HS, said everyone at the school is excited for Guerrero. “The entire Bishop Kearney community is thrilled for Shannon and immensely proud of her success. Shannon is a fantastic example of Bishop Kearney’s mission that every young woman has limitless potential,” she said.

The selection criteria for the Peter M. Flanigan Scholarship includes academic achievement and participation in leadership activities as well as community service. Only students who were invited could apply. Applicants for the scholarship are part of the city-wide Student Sponsor Partners (SSP) organization.

Bishop Kearney High School, located at 2200 60th St., was founded in 1961.  It consists of grades 9-12 and attracts students from three boroughs, as well as international applicants from mainland China. In addition to an Advanced Placement and college preparatory curriculum, the school also boasts award-winning sports and arts programs.
