ON THIS DAY in 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Big Yacht Basin Planned for Harway Meadows.” The article focused on a sale of 175 acres on Gravesend Bay.  “The sale … is reported this afternoon to a syndicate of capitalists and yachtsmen whose purpose, if it is stated, is to transform the meadows opposite Coney Island into the largest yacht basin in the world,” the Eagle reported.  “The property is what has for a century been known as the Harway Basin … and is divided by Harway Avenue.”
