Brooklyn Rugby Club entered Week 7 of the 2014 season coming off of tough losses on the men’s and women’s sides. But both teams rebounded this weekend and earned big wins at home in front of a large crowd on Brooklyn Rugby Club’s Friends and Family Day. The men cruised to a 69-0 win over the Gotham Knights, while the women earned a 14-7 win over Portland Rugby Club, who made the trek down from Maine.

The Brooklyn men accumulated their highest point total of the season, scoring an impressive ten tries and adding a penalty conversion from Gennaro Anzalone. Anzalone and Gedas Monginas were playing in their final games for Brooklyn this weekend, and the team ensured that they had a memorable sendoff. Monginas finished the game with three tries, while Anzalone converted 8 of 10 conversions on the day, along with a penalty conversion in the first half. Brooklyn led 22-0 at halftime with two tries coming from Craig Mackenzie and one by Gedas Monginas.

Brooklyn upped the tempo in the second half, scoring seven more tries that came from a combination of pack and backline players. Ben Deschamps, in only his second game with the club, scored two tries, while Gedas Monginas added a pair to round out his hat trick on the day. Mario Avocato, Iain Cockshott and Rob Roche also joined the scoring parade with a try apiece. Although the numbers strongly favored Brooklyn’s offense, it was their defense that maintained a clean sheet, capping a 69-0 win, one of the largest margins of victory in the team’s history.

In their second to last game of the season, the Brooklyn women hosted Portland. Brooklyn demonstrated outstanding defense throughout the entirety of the match with a number of big hits and timely steals that kept the ball in Portland’s half for most of the game. The game’s first try came from Sarah Bepko. After receiving the ball at pace, Bepko found a gap, shook off a few tackles and touched down under the posts, making the conversion easy for Kyla Maxwell who made the game 7-0. Ariane Bergeron, one of Brooklyn’s international players who joined the team from Canada, scored next after stealing possession of a ruck within Portland’s 22 and pushing across the line for the team’s second try. Maxwell converted again to put Brooklyn up 14-0.

Portland cut the lead in half with a try and conversion in the second half, but that would be all they could generate on a day when Brooklyn’s defense was the big story. Brooklyn came away with a well-earned victory, 14-7.
