ON THIS DAY in 1912, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “$3,500,000 Damage Claims Filed for 3 Blocks of Subway.” The article focused on charges filed against the city for damages done to Fulton Street from Flatbush Avenue to Ashland Place.

“Damages aggregating nearly $4 million have been filed against the city for the three short blocks of the Fourth Avenue subway…” the Eagle reported. “The property owners, who oppose the city acquiring the fee of the land, claim enormous damages.”

THE FIRST U.S. WOMAN SENATOR was appointed on this day in 1922 by then-Gov. Thomas Hardwick of Georgia. Rebecca Felton took the seat vacated by the death of Thomas Watson. It was a two-day ad interim appointment.

HARVEY KURTZMAN was born in Brooklyn on this day in 1902. Kurtzman was a cartoonist and the founder of Mad magazine. He died in 1993.

DRAWINGS ALONG MYRTLE starts at 5 p.m. Saturday with a self-guided art walk of the exhibits, which are located at Splitty (415 Myrtle Ave.), DC Optics (390 Myrtle Ave.) and The Emerson (561 Myrtle Ave.). There will be a reception at 7 p.m. at Splitty.

AMISTAD TOURS will take place at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 5 promenade on Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The tour focuses on the history of the Amistad Incident of 1839 with the Amistad Crew and N.Y. Harbor School students.
