Bay Ridge resident Mary Nolan, president of the Commodore Barry Club of Brooklyn, received the Paul O’Dwyer Award at the Great Irish Fair held recently in Coney Island. The award is named in memory of Paul O’Dwyer, a native of Mayo County, Ireland, who championed progressive causes and served as president of the New York City Council from 1974 to 1977.

Martin Cottingham, chairman of the fair, presented the award to Nolan. She also received a state Senate citation from state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southwest Brooklyn). Brian O’Dwyer, son of the late Paul O’Dwyer, was on hand at the presentation.

Nolan, a native of County Limerick, came to the U.S. in 1953. She is a founding member of the Brooklyn-Staten Island Chapter of the Immigration Reform Movement and serves on the board of directors of the Emerald Isle Immigration Center in Flushing. She also sits on the Lay Advisory Board of the Brooklyn Diocesan Irish-American Apostolate.

Nolan, who has lived in Bay Ridge for many years, is a member of Community Board 10.
