ON THIS DAY in 1910, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Sen. Burlingame Beaten at Riotous Convention.” The article focused on a senatorial convention in Flatbush.
“Naval Officer Frederick J. H. Kracke, as chairman of the most riotous convention held in Brooklyn in years, managed to accomplish the defeat of Sen. Alvah W. Burlingame Jr. for renomination on the Republican ticket last night…” the Eagle reported.  “For three hours and more Kracke banged the gavel, knocking over the water pitcher, loosening the head of the gavel, and fighting all the time to force his rulings upon the convention.”
