The Brooklyn Rugby men’s team closed out the 2014 regular season with an impressive 72-10 win over visiting Long Island at Fort Hamilton Army Base on Saturday. Brooklyn notched their highest point total of the season, scoring 12 tries that came from 9 different players, to finish the season with a 4-3 record and securing a spot in the Empire Rugby Football Union playoffs.

Captain Mike Reilly opened the scoring early on with a long run that put Brooklyn up 5-0, after Johnny Gearity missed on the conversion attempt. Brooklyn then added four more tries in the first half from Simon Fong, Ben Deshchamps, Errol Jones, and Kamil Ryczko. Fong was successful on 2 of his 4 conversion attempts in the first half. Long Island came back with two tries of their own, but missed on both conversions to bring the deficit to 19. Brooklyn would go into the half with a 29-10 lead.

The second half was a one-sided affair that saw Brooklyn add 7 more tries through a combination of dynamic offensive play and staunch defense. Much like the first half, Mike Reilly opened the second half scoring with a long run in the opening phase of play, after moving from flanker to inside center. Ben Deschamps, who had already scored in the first half after brilliantly chasing and touching down his own kick, added two more tries in the second half after a pair of dazzling runs along the touch line, giving him three on the day. Mark O’Donnell, P.J. Kinsella, Toby Tornay and Rob Roche each added a try in the second half as well, while Simon Fong finished with a solid day all around going 6 from 12 on conversion attempts.

Brooklyn: 72 – Long Island: 10

Tries: Ben Deschamps (3), Mike Reilly (2), Simon Fong, Errol Jones, Mark O’Donnell, Kamil Ryczko, P.J. Kinsella, Toby Tornay, Rob Roche

Conversions: Simon Fong (6)

The Brooklyn RFC men will await the results of next week’s final division game between Rockaway and Gotham to determine where they will be seeded in the playoffs in the spring.
