A Brooklyn student is on her way to becoming a cub reporter for a national news service that has millions of readers.

The budding journalist is Adedayo Perkovich, a 10-year-old from Fort Greene, who has been named a member of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps. She was one of 32 kids from across the country to receive the honor. Hundreds of students applied for the available slots. The application process involved children writing articles about their communities. The kids were also required to submit essays on why they want to be news reporters.

The Scholastic News Kids Press Corps is a team of young journalists, ages 10-14, who report on “news for kids, by kids” for Scholastic News Online (magazines.scholastic.com). The young reporters will cover current events, breaking news, entertainment stories and sports events from their hometowns. Their articles will also appear in select issues of Scholastic’s classroom magazines, which are read by more than 25 million students.

Adedayo Perkovich, who attends the Institute for Collaborative Education in Manhattan, already knows what types of news stories she wants to write. “I am interested social justice issues and I think that it is important to share people’s stories with the world to help us understand each other more,” she said in a statement.

In the past, members of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps have interviewed lawmakers, movie stars, authors and sports heroes. The kids even had a sit-down with President Barack Obama.

In addition, the young journalists have met pros like NBC News Anchor Brian Williams and Soledad O’Brien, the former CNN anchor who is now chairman of Starfish Media Group. The cub reporters picked up useful tips on how to gather and report the news.

The corps is the country’s oldest student reporting program.

Suzanne McCabe, editor of the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, said she’s excited to be working with the new crop of young reporters.

“The Scholastic News Kid Reporters’ stories are a terrific way to engage students with news reported by kids their own age. They’re an invaluable complement to the articles in Scholastic News magazines and on Scholastic News online, which put contemporary news in a context that’s relevant and age-appropriate for young readers. I’m really looking forward to working with our new team of kid reporters and seeing them grow as young journalists,” she stated.

Reporting the news will be just one of many activities in the busy life of Adedayo Perkovich. She is also a member of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and takes piano and voice lessons. In her spare time, she likes to draw, ice skate, go to the theater and listen to jazz, hip-hop and pop music.
