NEW YORK — Handlers Take Balloons for Practice Run Before Annual Parade: Handlers steer Thomas the Tank Engine balloon through the parking lot at CitiField on Saturday in New York. The balloon was taken for a practice run along with five other new character balloons in preparation for the 88th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Thomas the Tank Engine will be the parade’s largest balloon by helium volume and the one which contains the most balloon fabric ever used on one character.

PHILIPPINES — Artist Finishes Mural Depicting Typhoon Scenarios after Anniversary: An artist puts finishing touches of a mural depicting various situations when typhoon Haiyan ravaged Tacloban and other central Philippine provinces last year on Friday. Various activities are lined up on Nov. 8 to commemorate the first year anniversary of massive typhoon Haiyan that ravaged Leyte, Eastern Samar and other provinces in central Philippines, killing thousands of people in Leyte alone and left a wide swath of destruction.

NEPAL — Bird Food Vender Waits for Customers Near Holy Site: A Nepalese bird food vendor counts money while he awaits customers near the Boudhanath stupa, in Katmandu, Nepal, on Monday. Boudhanath stupa, is one of the holiest Buddhist sites in the country, surrounded by prayer wheels and decorated with colorful streams of flitting prayer flags.

SOUTH KOREA — Mothers Pray During Service for Children’s Success: Mothers pray during a special service for their children’s success in the upcoming college entrance exam at Bongeun Buddhist temple in Seoul, South Korea, on Saturday. About 600,000 high school seniors and graduates across the country are expected to take the College Scholastic Ability Test on Nov. 13.

GERMANY — Abandoned Places: Former NSA Listening Station — In this Oct. 16 photo, the ruin of a vandalized, golf ball-shaped cover for antennas of the abandoned former listening station of the United States National Security Agency, at the Teufelsberg (Devil’s Mountain) is reflected in a puddle in Berlin. The listening station, which was active until the early ’90s, is now used by graffiti artists and can be visited only with guided tours.
