Dance/NYC, an organization dedicated to promoting the knowledge, appreciation, practice and performance of dance in the metropolitan area, has released a NEW YORKERS FOR DANCE video campaign spotlighting local residents, community leaders and artists in Brooklyn. This is the latest in a series of borough-specific campaigns by Dance/NYC that celebrates dance’s role in advancing local vibrancy.

“I am a New Yorker for Dance,” says New York City Councilmember Stephen Levin. “I see firsthand the joy, passion and discipline that dance brings to young people throughout New York City.”

Twenty-eight Brooklyn residents are featured in Dance/NYC’s NEW YORKERS FOR DANCE video campaign, each providing a personal statement on why dance matters to them and to their community. Local Brooklyn participants include Stephanie Hughley, the vice president of Education and Humanities at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; Andrea Miller, the artistic director of Gallim Dance; and Brooklyn b-boy Major King, among others.

“Dance/NYC is connecting faces and names to the powerful contributions of dance and culture to the people of Brooklyn, and generating visibility and participation,” explains Lane Harwell, Dance/NYC executive director.

According to the State of NYC Dance 2013 report, Brooklyn is home to 47 percent of New York City’s fiscally sponsored dance makers, and 23 percent of New York City’s dance nonprofits.
