Greetings, Brooklyn.  Today is the 317th day of the year.

ON THIS DAY in 1914, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Slim Hope to Save Girl Rabies Victim.” The article focused on a rabies probe that was to take place at the time due to children being bitten by infected animals.

“Hope was abandoned today for the recovery of Grace Polhemus, the 13-year-old … who is dying from hydrophobia, more than a year after she was infected by the bite of a stray cat,” the Eagle reported.  “The coma which has marked her condition for the last two days has increased today…. In their opinion, death cannot be delayed beyond tomorrow.”
