Members of Kiwanis International have found a unique way to celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of their service organization. They donated $100,000 to the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center on Long Island. Brooklyn Kiwanis clubs were among those who helped raise the funds that were donated.

The $100,000 check was presented to medical center representatives by leaders of the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center Foundation, a group formed to provide funding and support for the health care facility.

The donated funds will be used to purchase diagnostic and treatment tools appropriate for the size of a child and to create special trauma education programs specifically geared to emergency medical service personnel, according to Kiwanis members.

The donors were given a tour of the medical center on Nov. 13. The center is part of the North Shore Long Island Jewish health care system.

“The effort partners Kiwanis’ global initiative in its commitment to children and local communities, with North Shore’s commitment to medical excellence, outreach and education,” said Joe Corace, president of the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center Foundation.

All the Kiwanis clubs in Brooklyn support and are a part of the pediatric trauma center, according to Corace, who told the Brooklyn Eagle in an email that the center is the only Level 1 medical facility in that area. The trauma center also serves Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

The Kiwanis clubs located in Brooklyn are: Bedford Stuyvesant; 86th Street; Gravesend; Kings Plaza; Parkway East; West End; Marine Park; Dyker Heights; Bensonhurst; Bay Ridge; and Mapleton. The Mapleton Club also serves Coney Island and Sunset Park.

Over the past two decades, more than $1 million has been donated to Cohen Children’s Medical Center by more than 100 Kiwanis clubs in the New York District of Kiwanis International.

In November 2013, North Shore-LIJ Health System formally relocated acute in-patient pediatric services the Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The center is dedicated exclusively to the care of children.

The Cohen Pediatric Trauma Center also supports the New York State Safe Kids programs in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Long Island.

Kiwanis International, founded in 1915, is a global organization of clubs whose members have dedicated themselves to serving the children of the world. Kiwanis has a family of clubs, including Circle K International for university students, Key Club for students age 14–18, Builders Club for students age 11–14, Kiwanis Kids for students age 6–12 and Aktion Club for adults living with disabilities.
