ON THIS DAY in 1904, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Final Eagle Canvass Gives Parker Pluralities of 41,957 in Brooklyn, of 126,371 in Manhattan and Bronx, and of 180,071 in Greater New York.” The article focused on a voting canvass based on numbers from the returned postal cards.  The Eagle explained the canvass: “…the figures presented are not offered as a prediction, but merely as an indication of the trend of political sentiments as shown in the postal cards returned to it.”  The numbers found the state to be largely Democratic.
