Brooklyn residents who visit the offices of their local council members usually go there to seek help with quality of life issues or to get information about city programs. But on Sunday, constituents of Councilmember Mark Treyger who visit his Gravesend district office can walk away with a new pet.

Treyger, the owner of two rescued Yorkies named Bella and Bashful, is joining forces with the Sean Casey Animal Rescue group to hold a pet adoption event on Sunday, Nov. 9, outside his district office at 2015 Stillwell Ave., from noon to 5 p.m.

Treyger (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-Bensonhurst) said he was inspired to partner with Sean Casey Animal Rescue after he and his wife adopted a Yorkie, Bella, from the group earlier this year. The Treygers also have another Yorkie, Bashful, whom they adopted from a shelter.

“As someone who truly cares about providing every animal with a good home, I am proud to partner with Sean Casey Animal Rescue for this great event. My wife and I rescued an adorable Yorkie from Sean Casey, so I know firsthand how caring and professional this organization is. I urge anyone who has been thinking about welcoming a pet into their family to consider rescuing a dog or cat on Sunday in order to provide a permanent home for one of the many animals in need,” Treyger said.

The councilmember said that by adopting one pet, a resident is actually saving the lives of two animals; each adoption opens up space for the Sean Casey organization to accept another animal into its facility.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue and shelter located at 153 East Third St. in Kensington. Its mission is to aid stray and abandoned animals and provide them with a higher quality of life. They accept rescued, confiscated, neglected, injured, ill, unmanageable or otherwise unwanted animals from private owners, zoos, shelters and other organizations and then care for and rehabilitate the animals until they can be placed in a healthy home.

In addition to dogs and cats, the organization rescues reptiles, amphibians, birds, small mammals and other wildlife. The animal shelter is open every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Here’s some handy information for those seriously considering adopting a pet at the Nov. 9 fair: the dog adoption fee is $308.50, the cat adoption fee is $100, and it costs $125 to adopt a kitten. Personal references are required, along with a reference from a veterinarian if you have previously owned a pet.
