With the cold weather coming, homeowners who need help paying their heating bills can get assistance from New York State. Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis is among the elected officials urging homeowners to check out the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), find out if they are eligible and enroll if they are.

The enrollment period for HEAP begins on Monday, Nov. 17.  HEAP is a federally-funded program that is administered through New York state. The program offers up to $625 for eligible households to help pay for energy costs to keep their homes warm during the winter.

“New York is an expensive place to live year-round, but costs can increase exponentially during the winter months. Heating your home is an essential amenity that all New Yorkers deserve, and HEAP helps make this possible for many residents who struggle with high energy costs during our coldest season,” said Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island), who called HEAP “a valuable program that is worth exploring if you are in need of cost relief this winter.”

Last year, 35,000 New Yorkers applied for HEAP through the state’s website, according to the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

For the 2014-15 season, a household of four can earn up to $50,629 a year, or $4,219 a month, and still qualify for assistance, Malliotakis said.

Here are the eligibility rates for households:

  • One-person households can earn up to $2,194 a month.

  • For two-person households, the threshold is $2,869 a month.

  • Three-person households can earn up to $3,544 a month.

  • Four-person households can earn up to $4,219 a month.

HEAP also operates an emergency program, according to the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The HEAP Emergency Benefit Component is designed to help low-income residents who are facing a heat related energy emergency and do not have resources to pay.

The Emergency Benefit Component of the 2014-15 HEAP season opens Jan. 2.
