ON THIS DAY in 1914, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Tells How He Stole; $50,000 From Gould: Gaskin, Who Made Escape at Courthouse, Recaptured and Confesses Many Thefts.”

The article focused on a captured thief who confessed to robbing multiple cigarette stores.

“A slightly built youth of 21, John Gaskin stood before Judge Fawcett in the County Court House this forenoon, and with an amused smile unfolded to the group of detectives court attaches and newspaper men who pressed about him a tale of his exploits that sounded like fiction,” the Eagle reported.  “There was nothing of braggadocio about the lad, as he told his story of crime…”

A TRADITIONAL FALL FESTIVAL and street fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday (rain or shine) at Historic Plymouth Church (75 Hicks St.).  The biannual Yankee Fair features a history tour, food and a dress-up booth.  For more information, visit www.plymouthchurch.org.  

A TRIPLE CONSCIOUSNESS forum will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum’s Rubin Pavilion on the first floor.  The forum, titled Mythologies of the “Diva:” Re-examining the Image of Black Women in Pop Culture, will be moderated by Shani Jamila.  

A HEALTH AND FITNESS expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday on the Factory Floor at Industry City (241 37th St.).  The event is through the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by EmblemHealth.  This event will kick off its inaugural Brooklyn Health and Fitness Week.

A NIGHT OF DYLAN Thomas will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday at BookCourt.  The Welsh poet will be celebrated with readings from Pulitzer Prize-winning Paul Muldoon, Poetry Foundation President Robert Polito, former Poetry Editor for The Nation Grace Schulman and Guggenheim Fellow Victoria Redel.
