Plymouth Church’s Yankee Fair continues as one of city’s oldest street fests
History Plays Central Role in this Year’s Event
Plymouth Church will sponsor its well-known Yankee Fair — a traditional fall festival, street fair and indoor marketplace — this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.
The biannual Yankee Fair is one of the oldest continuing fairs in New York City, taking place since the Civil War when the event originally raised money for war efforts. The Yankee Fair also continues Plymouth’s spirit of community, celebrating a congregation that was founded in 1847.
The church’s founding minister was the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. During the Yankee Fair, Plymouth Church will display the apron Mrs. Beecher wore during the earliest fairs among other artifacts.
