Brooklyn will have a seat at the table when it comes to crafting legislation on everything from consumer protections to telecommunications when the new congress convenes in early January.

U.S. Rep. Yvette D. Clarke announced that she has been selected by the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee to become a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Established in 1795, the Energy and Commerce Committee is one of the oldest and continuously working committees in congress.

“I am deeply honored to have been selected by my colleagues to become a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which holds broad authority to build prosperity for every American in the 21st Century,” Clarke (D-Central Brooklyn) said in a statement.

The committee’s responsibilities include a broad area of oversight relating to telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, air quality, energy supplies, and interstate commerce.

Its jurisdiction extends over several federal agencies, including the departments of energy, health and human services, and transportation, as well the Federal Trade Commission, Food and Drug Administration, and the Federal Communications Commission.

“As the committee responsible for consumer protection, food safety, energy development, public health, communications, the environment and interstate and international commerce, the Energy and Commerce Committee has a critical role in the development of our economy and in determining whether all families will share in our prosperity. I am committed to supporting the work of the community I represent in Brooklyn, which has become renowned as a center of innovation and includes some of the best hospitals and most dedicated health care workers, as well as businesses and trade associations that buy and sell products from around the world,” Clarke said. “As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I will have an opportunity to expand on my efforts to build an economy that works for all Americans, here in Brooklyn and across the United States.”

Clarke’s district includes parts of Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Flatbush, Gerritsen Beach, Madison, Midwood, parts of Park Slope and Flatlands, Prospect Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and Windsor Terrace. The district also takes in parts of Sheepshead Bay in southern Brooklyn.
