ON THIS DAY in 1916, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Whitman Suspects Cropsey’s Motives.” The article focused on conflict during a mayoral campaign at the time between a candidate and the governor.  

“Gov. Whitman was, if anything, more interested than the local GOP leaders in the announcement last Tuesday of Justice Cropsey that fusion should be abandoned in the coming mayoralty campaign and a straight-out Republican nominated, who had a record just like Cropsey’s record,” the Eagle reported.

“GONE WITH THE WIND” premiered on this day in 1939.  The film was one of the 20th Century’s biggest film blockbusters.  It is based on Margaret Mitchell’s bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of Civil War Passions.  It won eight Academy Awards.
