ON THIS DAY in 1920, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “One Bandit Killed; Two Officers Shot in L.I. Gun Fight.”

The article focused on two sheriffs being wounded badly after a gun battle involving burglars.

“In the very heart of Huntington, within a stone’s throw of the Town Hall and the headquarters of the Fire Department and within 200 feet of Main Street… a desperate gun battle took place last night between two deputy sheriffs and three burglar suspects,” the Eagle reported.
