ON THIS DAY in 1906, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Burnam is Sentenced to Two Years in Prison.” The article focused on the vice president of an insurance company who was convicted of grand larceny.  

“George Burnham Jr., counsel and vice president of the Mutual Reserve Life Insurance Company, who was convicted a week ago of  grand larceny, was this morning sentenced to States Prison for two years by Justice Greenbaum in the Criminal Branch of the Supreme Court,” the Eagle reported.

THE AZTEC CALENDAR solar stone was discovered on this day in 1790.  One of the wonders of the Western Hemisphere, the solar stone was found beneath the ground by workmen repairing Mexico City’s Central Plaza. The centuries-old stone is 11 feet, 8 inches in diameter and weighs nearly 25 tons.  The stone is believed to have been carved in 1479.

THE WRIGHT BROTHERS had their first powered flight on this day in 1903.  Orville and Wilbur Wright, after three years of experimentation with kites and gliders, achieved the first documented successful powered flights of an airplane near Kitty Hawk, N.C.
