U.S. Navy Petty Officer Shrese Davis, a native of Brooklyn, is seeing the world from aboard the amphibious assault ship U.S.S. Makin Island.

Davis graduated from Pacific High School in 2004 and enlisted into the Navy the following year.

“I wanted to visit new places and meet new people and the Navy gave me that opportunity,” she said.

Davis is currently serving as an aviation boatswain’s mate (fuels) second class and is responsible for fueling all aircraft and aviation equipment aboard the U.S.S. Makin Island.

In her naval career, Davis has been deployed three times. As a seasoned sailor, she serves as a mentor to many junior sailors who are experiencing their first deployment.

“I try to show junior sailors how their contributions play into the ship’s overall mission and I urge them to stay busy with their qualifications,” she said.

During its current deployment, the U.S.S. Makin Island has conducted port visits to Hong Kong and Singapore, where Davis and other sailors and marines were able to sightsee and participate in tours and community relations projects. “I really enjoyed the tours in Singapore,” Davis said. “I was able to experience the culture and try new foods.”

Davis has set personal goals to earn both her enlisted aviation warfare specialist and enlisted surface warfare specialist qualifications before returning from deployment.

“It’s coming along,” said Davis. “I’m almost done with my air warfare and then I’ll roll right into my surface warfare qualification.”

Davis also said she plans to make a career in the Navy with goal of being an accomplished sailor that her shipmates can look up to.

“It’s important to have those knowledgeable people to confide in who can give you answers based off their personal experience,” said Davis. “Hopefully one day I can be that cool master chief.”
