ON THIS DAY in 1913, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “2 Congregational Churches to Unite.” The article focused on two churches that were finalizing merging plans at the time.

“Negotiations are under way, and have practically been completed, according to reports that gained currency today, for a merger of the United Congregational Church … with the Central Congregational Church,” the Eagle reported. “While the plans for the merger have not been disclosed, it is stated from an authentic source that it will mean the abandonment of the Lee Avenue edifice as a piece of worship…”
