The Brooklyn Heights Association (BHA) has announced that Judy Stanton, BHA’s longtime executive director, plans to retire on Aug. 31, 2015.

Stanton has served the BHA since the early 1980s, first as a member of the BHA’s Board of Governors and later as its first executive director. She has been a tireless advocate for the Heights in issues both major — such as reviving P.S. 8, working to save Long Island College Hospital (LICH) and facilitating Brooklyn Bridge Park — to everyday quality of life concerns including street lights, tourist buses, landmarks designation, movie filming and tree planting.

In a statement, the BHA board said, “Known to many as ‘the face of the BHA,’ her tenure reflects an exceptional dedication, integrity and passion for dealing with all issues that concern Brooklyn Heights. Her experience and deep community roots have been invaluable to the neighborhood. She has set a high bar for the BHA Board, and her example will inspire us as we look to the future.”

Stanton, also called “the mayor of Brooklyn Heights” by former Borough President Marty Markowitz, the “godmother of P.S. 8” by Principal Seth Phillips and one of the “fifty most influential people who have shaped Brooklyn neighborhoods” by Brownstoner, has left an indelible mark on the historic neighborhood.
