New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer attended and spoke at a rally to protect tenants’ rights held in Crown Heights on Saturday alongside hundreds of residents, the Crown Heights Tenants Association, New York Communities for Change, Flatbush Tenants Coalition, and the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board.

“The affordable housing crisis is rampant throughout our City,” Comptroller Stringer said. “My office released a report earlier this year revealing that New York City has lost over 400 thousand units of housing that rented for under $1,000 over the last 15 years.”

With rent stabilization laws set to expire in July 2015, tenants are organizing to ensure passage of legislation in Albany to protect access to affordable housing across New York State.

“When developers push long-term residents out to build market rate housing, they are tearing at the fabric of our communities,” added Stringer. “The people who built New York City should have the right to stay, raise families and retire in the neighborhoods in which they invested.”
