Long live the Kings!

The renovations of the former Loew’s Kings movie theatre in Brooklyn and an old public school in New York City were among the seven projects that have received 2014 New York State Historic Preservation Awards.

The awards are given each year by state parks officials to honor the rejuvenation of New York’s historic and cultural resources.

Winning projects this year included the conversion of a former department store in downtown Oneonta into a commercial and residential complex and the rehabilitation of former Public School 109 for affordable housing for artists in New York City.

Now called the Kings Theatre, the landmark facility in Flatbush is expected to open as a performing arts venue in January. Other winners are the Academy Lofts in Albany, the New York State Barge Canal Historic District, Suffolk Theater in Riverhead and the West Point Foundry in Cold Spring.
