ON THIS DAY in 1905, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “For Football 15 to 8, But Asking a Reform.” The article focused on a conference of 13 representatives that opposed a proposed abolition of college football at the time.
“Football is not to be abolished, not even in the smallest colleges,” the Eagle reported. “By a vote of 15 to 8 the delegates to the MacCracken conference, which began at the Murray Hill Hotel this morning, adopted a resolution declaring that it was the opinion of the 13 college representatives present that football should not be abolished, but reformed.”
