BUFFALO— New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state’s education policy-making board is putting up roadblocks to the teacher evaluation system he championed.

The comments came Monday after a Board of Regents work group released recommendations in response to concerns over the state’s implementation of the Common Core learning standards and their effect on student assessments and teacher evaluations.

Among the recommendations was to let teachers temporarily argue against being fired on the basis of their students’ poor performance on assessments aligned with the new standards.

The teacher evaluation law advanced by Cuomo requires districts to consider student performance on the assessments in hiring and firing decisions.

Cuomo’s strongly worded statement calls the recommendations “another in a series of missteps by the Board of Regents.”
