Good morning. Today is the 50th day of the year. On this day in 1874, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported on a night watchman who shot a chicken thief at 660 St. Marks Ave. in Crown Heights. “As of late, this type of thievery has been carried on to a great extent, especially in that neighborhood, where almost every house has an acre of ground attached and fowls of various types are kept,” the Eagle said. “Only two nights ago, twenty-eight geese were driven out of a yard on Herkimer Street.” The watchman had been hired by a group of homeowners to protect several blocks in the area.

Well-known people who were born today include Britain’s Prince Andrew, singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson (“Ooh, Baby Baby,” “Tracks of My Tears,” “I Second That Emotion”), author Amy Tan (“The Joy Luck Club”), signer-songwriter Seal, Brooklyn-born author Jonathan Lethem (“Motherless Brooklyn,” “Fortress of Solitude”) and National Football League Commissioner Robert Goodell.
