Forget the Super Bowl! Students at one Bay Ridge school will compete for a different kind of championship.

The team from Fontbonne Hall Academy has qualified to compete in the National History Bowl in Washington, D.C. in April. The competition is a high-stakes quiz that tests a student’s knowledge of history.

Students Jennifer Reilly, Michela DeVito, Chloe Ladias and Emily Hirowski shined when they recently completed in a regional qualifying tournament at Lynbrook High School.

Founded in 2010, the National History Bowl is sponsored by the publishing company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This year, the contest is adding a series of new tournaments, introducing an all-US History Bee.

Fontbonne Hall Academy, a Catholic high school for girls, is located on Shore Road in Bay Ridge. The school offers a strong history curriculum, according to administrators, who said Advanced Placement (AP) World History will be added this year. Students will take AP World History over the course of two years beginning in the ninth grade.

In other school news, members of Fontbonne’s junior class made Valentine’s Day a lot brighter for patients at Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Fontbonne girls created 130 homemade Valentine’s Day cards for the children and mailed them to the hospital.
