Vincent Gentile isn’t a real estate broker, but he is going to have a lot to say about property development in New York City over the next four years.

Gentile, a Democratic councilman whose district includes Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, was nominated by Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito to serve as a member of the council’s Land Use Committee. Mark-Viverito’s nomination of Gentile was quickly approved by the council’s Rules Committee.

Gentile has also been appointed to the Committee on Zoning and Franchises.

Under a 1990 revision of the City Charter, the council acquired the power to review land use issues and approve zoning changes, housing and urban renewal plans, community development plans and the disposition of city-owned property.

“I am honored to have been nominated by Speaker Mark-Viverito and approved by the Rules Committee as a new member of both the council’s zoning and land use committees,” Gentile said.

Councilman David Greenfield (D-Borough Park-Midwood-Bensonhurst) is the chairman of the Land Use Committee. The zoning chairman is Councilman Mark Weprin (D-Queens).

“I look forward to working with my colleagues Chair Greenfield and Chair Weprin going forward as we enter into a new chapter of transparent government ; one where all voices have a place at the table and the power to help to shape the direction we take as the legislative body of the greatest city in the world,” Gentile said.

Gentile, who was first elected in 2003 and is the council’s senior member in terms of longevity, currently serves as chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Committee.
