Good morning. Today is the 85th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for March 26, 1902, reported on the negotiations for the new Tenement House Law, currently in progress. Brooklyn builders wanted less-stringent requirements for tenements that were three stories or less, such as smaller backyards, but the city refused. When the law was finally passed, it was an important reform measure for its day – it mandated bathrooms in every apartment, rather than one per floor; heat and hot water in each apartment; more backyard space and at least one window per room. Most of the “new-law tenements” constructed after that date were walk-ups, but elevators were still prohibitively expensive.

It is the birth anniversary (1874) of Robert Frost, American poet who tried his hand at farming, teaching, shoemaking and editing before winning acclaim as a poet. It is also the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Camp David Accord between Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, ending 30 years of war between the two countries. The agreement was brokered by President Jimmy Carter.

Well-known people who were born today include singer Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, actor Leonard Nimoy (“Star Trek”), singer-actress Diana Ross (“Lady Sings the Blues,” “The Wiz”), actress Jennifer Gray (“Dirty Dancing”), and author-poet Erica Jong (“Fear of Flying’).
