Anne Fortier’s New York Times bestselling debut “Juliet” quickly became an international bestseller published in 33 territories worldwide, and her new novel, “The Lost Sisterhood” (Ballantine Hardcover; March 11), already has received similar recognition.  Tying in to Women’s History Month, “The Lost Sisterhood” delves into one of our greatest myths―that of the Amazons―with a brilliantly entwined tale of a band of women who may have changed history, and a young modern-day scholar who thinks they might not be such a myth after all.

As the novel opens, young Oxford philologist Diana Morgan has been scoffed at by her colleagues in the cut-throat academic world because of her personal fixation on the Amazons—an interest fueled by her elusive grandmother and a coded notebook she left in Diana’s care. Diana feels vindicated when a mysterious foundation invites her to consult on a new excavation intent on proving that the Amazons actually lived. Diana and her enigmatic guide Nick Barran trace the historical footsteps of the first Amazons through the Sahara Desert and across the Mediterranean Sea―unaware that an international tomb-raiding syndicate is hot on their heels.

Interwoven with Diana’s journey is the story of the Amazons’ founding members, led by the legendary queen Myrina. From their peaceful beginnings in North Africa, Myrina and a small group of priestesses abandon gender conventions and embark on a perilous search for the Greek men who brutally raided their temple and kidnapped their companions. Their quest takes them to Crete, where Myrina meets Prince Paris of Troy—who awakens a forbidden passion she never expected to find. They track the raiders to the palace of King Agamemnon, who famously launched a thousand ships to reclaim the beautiful Helen. After clashing with the Greeks, Myrina and her sisters escape with the Trojans … and so begins a Trojan War very different from the one we have come to know through Homer, Hollywood and western “history.”

The author will appear in Brooklyn on Tuesday, March 11, for a lunch, talk and signing at The BookMark Shoppe in Bay Ridge.

The March 11 event begins at 7 p.m. The BookMark Shoppe is located at 8415 3rd Ave. in Bay Ridge.
