Good morning. Today is the 91st day of the year. On this day in 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle contained a story on the possibility that the Brooklyn Police Department would be absorbed into that of Greater New York. Brooklyn had been absorbed into New York City just a few years beforehand.

Today is April Fool’s Day, a tradition that began in France in 1564. Originally, April 1 used to be considered the first day of the year. People who persisted in celebrating the “old” new year after Jan. 1 was declared the first day of the year were called “April folls,” and it became common to play jokes and tricks on them.

It is also the first day of Couple Appreciation Month, for couples to hshow each other their love and emotional support; Jazz Appreciation Month, which highlights the glories of jazz as a historical and living treasure; and National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Well-known people who were born today include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, author David Eisenhower, actres Ali MacGraw (“Goodbye, Columbus,” ‘Love Story”), actress Jane Powell (“Seven Brides for Seven Brother”) actress Debbie Reynolds (“Singin’ in the Rain”) and former baseball player Rusty Staub.
